The full pupil questionnaire can be found in Appendix G. The questions were:
1 | Name the distance across the centre of the circle. | Diameter. |
2 | Name the perimeter of the circle. | Circumference. |
3a | Estimate the circumference if the diameter is a certain value. | Varies. |
3b | Explain how you got answer to 3a. | Multiply by 3 or p. |
4a | Estimate the diameter if the circumference is a certain value. | Varies. |
4b | Explain how you got answer to 4a. | Divide by 3 or p. |
5 | Describe the relationship between circumference and diameter. | C = pi × D or equivalent. |
Below are the results for the pupil questionnaires. The key is as follows:
x | : | incorrect answer |
~ | : | correct answer (using three instead of pi on questions 3-5) |
+ | : | correct answer (using pi or approximation to pi e.g. 3.14) |
. | : | no answer given |
Questionnaires 1 and 2 were completed immediately before and after the activity, and no prior warning of the topic was given. Questionnaire 3 was completed approximately 2 weeks later, again without prior warning.
